Olga Rakitchenkov
Olga Rakitchenkov, harp, was born in Moscow and began her musical studies at the Gnesin School for Musically Gifted Children. She started playing harp at the age of 11 in the class of Mark Ruben. In 1973, she graduated with honors from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music, studying with Vera Dulova. That same year, Ms. Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov won the harp position at the Bolshoi Theatre, where she worked as a co-principal harpist until her immigration in 1987. During her tenure with the Bolshoi, she won the International Harp Competition in Geneva, Switzerland in 1974. Ms. Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov has performed with L’Orchestre de Suisse Romande and the Symphony Orchestras of the Melhouse, Basel and Shaffhausen as soloist. She has also performed at harp festivals in France and Holland, and her performances have broadcast on radio and television. She has premiered many works including those by Shnitke, Denisov and Smirnov. Ms. Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov is currently principal harpist in the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and resides in Berkeley.
